Design Associates Kauai Portfolio
  • Project: Brown Residence
  • Location: Wailua Rise, Kaua`i
  • Description: Perched on the rim of the Wailua Canyon, this attractive home is filled with curves, fresh air, light, and wonderful views.
expansive lawn and curving drive greet visitors to the Brown home. Front entry. Particular attention was paid to the strong sculptural form of the red 'Torii' or Japanese inspired gate over the entrance porch. An Asian influence is found in many DAK homes. The graceful swooping curves of the railing and custom staircase complement each other nicely in this soaring two-story entry space. Note the shoji (Japanese sliding rice paper) doors, and the splash of natural sunlight falling on the stairs. Kitchen design is very important. This cooking island is positioned for maximum ease of flow. Note the refrigerator is 'built-in' to the wall, and the swinging doors to the conveniently located pantry. View from the breakfast nook looking through the kitchen to the center of the house. Note the curve of the winding stairway is reflected in the curve of the 'corners' of the walls, and the curved steps down into the living room area. The architectural focus of the living room is the set of large glass windows that meet in an 'invisible' mitered glass corner. View of the Brown House from the back yard. Note the echoing mitered glass corners on the first and second floors. This second story Master bathroom features a built-in soaking tub with expansive views of the Wailua Canyon and rolling open lands to the south. Note the jalousies (glass louvers) that allow for natural ventilation.
